Abha and Khamis Mushayt

Abha and Khamis Mushayt
Abha is the capital of the Asir region, with Khamis Mushayt ("Thursday Market") situated 30kms to its east. The architecture of the area is the main reason for visiting, with an amazing mixture of old and new. In the towns and villages of the area people still live in mud houses but note the electrical wiring and television aerials in the photos.

This is also the way in to Najran, with its amazing fort, and the Empty Quarter.

Directions (from Jeddah)

  • Fly down with Saudia, and use a rental vehicle to get around (the airport is 30kms east of Abha, and so is nearer Khamis).

Tips

  • Catch the first flight down on Thursday morning, heading back late Friday, and stay in Najran Thursday night

  • Arrange a rental vehicle before leaving Jeddah!

  • Don't forget a travel letter from your sponsor.

  • Photos appear to be almost welcomed by some people, but always ask first, and still avoid photographing the authorities.
